Getting to the Aiport by Car and Motorbike

Birmingham Airport is at the heart of the UK motorway network, enabling easy access for up to 35 million who are within a 2 hour driving time.  Passengers have access to a range of car parking choices, including valet parking and short, medium and long stay options.

The Airport has a wide range of on-site car parks, including secure motorbike parking, all within easy distance of the terminal building. Find out more.

Red routes are in operation on the airport site, this is to maintain safety for our passengers, visitors and staff.  Drivers are prohibited to stop, unload or park on red routes, which are clearly marked around the airport roads via signage and double red road markings.
A vehicle monitoring and enforcement operation is in place, with an enforcement charge of £100.Park onsite with NCP at Birmingham Airport.

Birmingham Airport is directly connected to over 100 towns and cities via Birmingham International Station and the free ‘Air-Rail Link’ system.  The Air-Rail Link is free and operates between 05:00 and 02:00 daily.

Birmingham Airport is directly connected to over 100 towns and cities via Birmingham International Station and the free ‘Air-Rail Link’ monorail system.  The Air-Rail Link is free and operates between 05:15 and 02:00 daily.Rail services operate regularly from Birmingham International to a range of destinations, by a number of operators, including:

Virgin Trains : – 3 trains per hour (tph) to London Euston | – 2tph to Birmingham New Street | – 1tph to Wolverhampton via Birmingham New Street.
Cross Country : – 1tph to Manchester Piccadilly | – 1tph to Bournemouth
London Midland : – 4tph to Birmingham New Street | – 1tph to London Euston via Northampton | – 1tph to Northampton | – 1tph to Coventry

Birmingham New Street is 10 minutes on a direct train, with seven services per hour from Birmingham International.  A single ticket costs £3.30.
Services to central London operate daily with three trains per hour serving London Euston with Virgin Trains and one train per hour by London Midland.  The journey takes approximately 70 minutes with Virgin Trains.

Chiltern Railway services can be accessed from Solihull Rail Station (via the966 bus service directly from the Airport) or via Leamington Spa (via trains from Birmingham International).  This offers alternative routes to London.  Chiltern Railways serve London Marylebone, Banbury, Bicester, High Wycombe, Warwick, Leamington Spa, Warwick Parkway, Solihull and Birmingham Moor Street.  Additional routes from Leamington Spa include Stratford-upon-Avon.

Birmingham Airport is served by a network of local bus routes as well as long distance coach services from Megabus and National Express.  Hotel shuttle bus services also serve the Airport.

There are currently three bus services which access the Airport:

– 900 (connecting Birmingham and Coventry)

– 966 (connecting Erdington and Solihull)
– 777 (Hams Hall, Coleshill Parkway and Birmingham Airport)
– 97 (Birmingham City Centre to Birmingham Airport

Long distance coach services are operated by National Express and Megabus, with over 120 daily services to 35 main towns and cities across the UK.

National Express : The UK’s largest scheduled coach operator offers frequent direct services to and from destinations, including Birmingham, Oxford, Luton, Milton Keynes and Manchester.  Coaches arrive directly outside the Airport terminal and all services use modern, air conditioned vehicles.

Security and Luggage

Security

To help your journey through the airport flow more smoothly please read the information on security guidelines, baggage allowances and passport control.

Express Lane

Fast track security is available at Birmingham Airport. A separate security lane allows passengers to pass more quickly through security. You can purchase fast track security for £3.00 per person. There are walk-up kiosks at various locations throughout the terminal building.

For Express Lane bookings please present your booking confirmation at the Express Lane desk which is situated at the main security entrance on the first floor of the terminal.

Lost Property

Items of lost property found at the Airport or on Arriving Aircraft (with the exception of Pakistan International Airlines, Turkish Airlines & United) are held by our partner OCS.  These are held free of charge for the first 24 hours.  Then charges are as follows:

£5.00 per item per month or
£20.00 per high value item such as mobile phones/laptops per month.

For items of lost property found on Pakistan International Airlines, Turkish Airlines & United  arriving flights you will need to contact the Airline.

The lost property office is located on the first floor, adjacent to Boots and can be contacted directly on 0121 767 7987 or by email bhx.lostproperty@ocs.co.uk.  Open 7 days a week, 0700 to 1900 hours.  Phone located next to office for any out of hours enquiries.

OCS also offer a Left Luggage facility at the same location. Charges for this are £7.50 per bag per 24 hours.

Baggage trolley vending units can be found at various locations around the Airport.  The cost of a baggage trolley is £1 or €2 (non-refundable).  Please note that there is a 40p surcharge for credit card use.

Introducing a charge for trolleys reflects the changing requirements of travellers, with the usage of wheeled suitcases reducing the demand for trolleys.  The closeness of the car parks to the terminal and the provision of a free bus service around the site also reduces the requirement for trolleys.

This service will ensure that high quality modern trolleys are available for those who require them.

  • Within the Drop and Go Car Park there are 2 vending units which accept credit cards and coins.
  • Short and Medium Stay Car Park 1  – 1 vending unit which accepts credit cards and coins.

  • There are vending units situated in both of the International Arrivals Baggage Reclaim areas and also in the Domestic Reclaim area.  All of these units accept credit cards and coins and 2 of the units accept £20, £10 and £5 notes and also give change.

Birmingham Airport offers a variety of facilities to assist passengers travelling through the airport. Passengers with reduced mobility should liaise in advance of arriving at the airport with our special assistance providers to ensure that they have the support they need at the Airport.

Special Assistance

OCS – Ltd are contracted by Birmingham Airport to provide assistance to persons with reduced mobility. There is no charge for this service.

How to get assistance

Wheelchair or Special Assistance – If you require wheelchair or special assistance for any part of your journey from arrival at the airport through to the aircraft or on your return journey, OCS staff will be happy to help. To arrange this please contact your airline or tour operator at least 48 hours before departure/arrival advising the type of assistance required. If you are unsure whether you need assistance at the airport, please consider the following approximate walking times:

Check-in Concourse 1-82 to Departure Lounge – 10 minutes
Departure Lounge to Gates 46-68 – 10 minutes maximum

Check-in Concourse 100-130 to Check-in Concourse 1-82 – 10 minutes

Equipment used by OCS includes People Movers (to and from gates 40-55), Standard Wheelchairs, Heavy Duty Wheelchairs, Self Propelled Wheelchairs, Child’s Wheelchair, Leg Extension Kits, Aircraft Aisle Chairs and Paging Devices.

For the Deaf

There are staff who can use sign language and these can be contacted from the Special Assistance Helpdesk. Induction Loop System – these and mini-loop systems are installed in various locations around the terminals.

Car Parking for Disabled Passengers

Spaces are available in the Drop & Go area which is close to the terminal building (see car park map). Blue Badge holders are entitled to up to 60 minutes free parking within the Drop & Go area upon production of their Blue Badge and car parking ticket at the NCP Customer Services desk within the terminal building. Normal charges apply if the 60 minutes is exceeded. Parking spaces are also available at multi-storey and long-stay surface car parks. Should you require assistance, help points are situated close to the disabled parking areas. Please note that car parking is charged at the normal rates. For security reasons, disabled drivers are advised that the Blue Badge scheme does not operate within the airport.

Assistance Dogs

Birmingham Airport accept registered assistance dogs if travelling on approved airlines and routes. Please contact the Special Assistance Helpdesk if assistance is required.

No dogs are allowed in the terminal buildings unless assistance dogs or are transiting onto an aircraft.

Religious and Cultural Facilities

The multi faith prayer room is on the ground floor behind Check in desk 28.

Washing facilities are available in the toilets on the same floor.
The multi faith prayer room is open from approximately 0400 to 2200 hours.
Within the room there are cupboards containing the things each major faith might need for worship and also a cupboard for shoes.  A plan of the cupboards is on the notice board outside the room.
Muslim Friday prayers are led at 1330 hours, staffing permitting.
Christian worship takes place every Tuesday at 1200 hours, Christmas and Easter mornings and Remembrance Day.  Roman Catholic Mass is celebrated on the first Tuesday of each month.
The multi faith prayer room is used with mutual respect by people of every faith and none.

What is a Changing Places Toilet?

A changing places toilet is designed to support parents/carers of people with disabilities who require the use of a hoist, changing bench and/or centrally located toilet.

Changing Places toilets include the following facilities:

  • A height adjustable changing bench
  • A hoist system to lift people between wheelchairs and the toilet/changing bench
  • Enough space to ensure the bench and toilet can be approached from either side.

Where is the Changing Places Toilet?

The Changing Places toilet is situated in the main departure lounge behind WH Smith Book shop.  The entry code to the facility can be obtained from the OCS Special Assistance Desk at the time of booking or by using the courtesy phone provided.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING POINTS WHEN USING THE FACILITY

  • For Health & Safety reasons we do not provide slings.  Customers are required to bring their own which should be compatible with the loop system.
  • Before using the changing bench please ensure that a protective paper sheet is placed on the bench and removed after use.
  • All soiled/disposable material should be placed in the sanitary bins provided.
  • It is the carer’s responsibility to ensure the safety of the user at all times including use of the hoist and under no circumstances should the weight limit of the equipment be exceeded.  For the hoist the maximum weight is 30 stone (200kg) and for the changing bench is 30 stone (200kg).

Business Point

Business Point offers meetings and conference facilities at Birmingham Airport including a variety of services: fax, photocopying, hourly meeting rooms, catering. The Business Point is a series of 4 meeting rooms situated in the management offices. You can choose from a spacious 40 seater theatre style space to an intimate 8 seater board room style. All rooms are equipped with flip charts and additional equipment can be provided upon request.

This summer from 15th July until the beginning of September, Zoom the Sky Cadet will be welcoming our youngest passengers to the airport and giving them the chance to become Sky Cadets like him by solving games and puzzles in their Sky Pass.

Each child travelling through the Airport in the summer holidays will be given a Sky Pass at check-in. This contains tasks, games and puzzles that will help the children earn their Sky Cadet ‘wings’ and enable them to gain access to the Sky Zone.

The Sky Side Crew

We have a team of specially auditioned and trained staff on hand to entertain and help families through the airport this summer. The team have been recruited from teacher training colleges around the region.

The Sky Zone

The ‘Sky Side’ experience is free to join and will start from the moment a child arrives at check-in and concludes when they arrive at a themed ‘Sky Zone’, an area furnished with modern interactive games and activities, including touch screen tables, interactive floor projection, a gazing station, music light beams and a story telling pods.

Sky Passes will be available at check-in and a dedicated Facebook page has been set up to inform you about the Sky Side scheme before your arrival at the Airport so that children can prepare themselves for their exciting mission.

Aircraft vewing area

Birmingham Airport offers an aircraft viewing area open to the public to view aircraft taking off and landing. The aircraft viewing area is free to the public and is located at the edge of Long Stay Car Park 1 nearest to the terminal building.

We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the construction activity taking place close to the viewing area. This temporary activity is related to the runway extension development and normal operations will resume over the course of the next 12 months.

Can I check-in the day before I fly?
Yes – if you’re flying with Thomson Airways from Birmingham, and your flight departs before 12.00 midday, you can check-in at desk 29 from 12.00 midday to 10pm the day before you fly.

Cruise holidays
You can check-in the day before if you’re going on a cruise holiday, except when you’re flying out to join a Thomson Cruise in the Caribbean or Sharm El Sheikh. This is due to baggage and medical screening requirements.

How to check in the day before

The day before you fly
Only one person from your party needs to go to check-in desk 29, providing all passengers are travelling on the same booking. They’ll need to bring tickets, passports and luggage for everyone on the booking, and must be able to vouch for the contents of the luggage. They’ll receive boarding cards and baggage receipts and can then leave the airport.

Travelling to the USA or Mexico? If you’re going to one of these destinations, you’ll need to return on the day of your flight to collect your boarding passes and complete extra security checks.

The day you fly
Return to the airport and – if you’ve already got your boarding card – go straight to airport security. All passengers must have their individual boarding cards before going through security to the departure lounge. Make sure you reach the departure gate at least 1 hour before your flight is due to leave. If you want to check-in any more bags, you’ll need to return to check-in.
