Katos Stalos, or Lower Stalos, lies on Crete’s northern coast and appeals to a variety of tourists searching for cheap holidays. Back down the hill, with a wide variety of restaurants, tavernas and bars open until late, often with live music, Katos Stalos has plenty to offer in terms of eating out and nightlife. All the facilities that you may need for family holidays are to be found here such as minimarkets, banks, pharmacies, hotels and various businesses. From here you can book various excursions to Cretan places of interest, such as the Samaria Gorge, or the Palace of Knossos, an ancient city left abandoned some three millennia ago, and considered by some to be Europe’s oldest city. You can also take a boat trip to the small island of Agii Theodori, just off the coast of Stalos.

When to Go
Stalos holidays are relaxing all year round, but the town certainly enjoys its warmest and driest weather right in time for the summer holidays. June, July and August enjoy temperatures of 25-30 degrees Celsius, and rainfall is virtually unheard of at this time. The main tourist season closes down around the end of October, but it is still a relaxing place for cheap holidays in the winter, if you’re willing to put up with a bit of rain.
