Samos Holidays

The Greek island of Samos, resplendent as an emerald in the setting of the deep blue Aegean Sea, is an ideal destination for family holidays. Indeed, with its Mediterranean climate assuring warm dry summers and mild winters the island is ideal for cheap holidays all year round. There’s also plenty to do and see, and anyone interested in the history and culture of the region will be in their element. In classical times Samos was a wealthy and powerful city state due to its close proximity to trade routes and Asia Minor. In the Middle Ages it was subject to Byzantine and Ottoman rule, and only became politically subject to Greece in 1912. The island is full of wonderful architecture and relics of the past. Samos is predominantly mountainous, with forests of oak and pine and a number of extensive fertile plains. Wine is the main local produce for export and Samos holidays are not complete without sampling the renowned muscat wine, aged in oak barrels.

Where To Stay For Holidays In Samos
Samos has a number of wonderful resorts for family holidays ranging from the tranquil to the lively.

A traditional Greek coastal village at heart, Ireon is quiet and welcoming, with friendly people who, like most of the Samos people, enjoy a good time, but also appreciate their art and culture, as witnessed by the summer festival which celebrates ancient theatre. The remains of the Temple Of Hera, the largest Greek temple ever built, are found here.

Located amidst olive groves and vineyards, Kokkari may well be the prettiest village on the island. It has lively bars and taverns, fine surfing, and delightful beaches within easy reach. The nearby hills and flower bedecked mountain villages are very tempting for hikers.

Mykali Beach is three kilometres of pebble beach with seafront taverns and cantinas, and plenty of facilities for water sports and beach games. Ideal for all the family.

The main tourist resort of Samos, Pythagorion is a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site. Samos holidays should certainly include the many fascinating historical sites to be found
here, such as the Roman Baths, Lykourgos Castle, and an ancient aqueduct cut 3,399 feet through a mountain; an amazing feat of engineering.

Samos Town
The capital of the island and its largest town, Samos Town has a beautiful natural harbour and is a central location for ferries to other islands. The archaeological museum is well worth a visit.

Other Points Of Interest For Holidays In Samos
For the liveliest nightlife, Samos Town, Kokkari and Pythagorion are the places to head for if you are looking for vibrant nightclubs and bars. However, traditional Greek music and festivities can be experienced in many of the smaller villages. The traditional Greek food is excellent, especially the fresh fish dishes and the horiatiki salad, and can be enjoyed for a reasonable price away from the main tourist areas, making for cheap holidays indeed. Lastly, you can still see the cave where Pythagoras, the most famous son of the island, taught in antiquity.
