Skopelos Holidays

Holidays in Skopelos are popular with people of all ages. The Greek island is home to a beguiling mixture of sandy beaches and beautiful traditional architecture. Skopelos Town, the main settlement on the island, was designated a Traditional Settlement of Outstanding Beauty by the Greek government in 1978. This defers a protected status to local properties and enforces strict requirements on the style of new buildings thereby ensuring that the area remains a scenic timewarp.

The visual appeal of Skopelos led to the island being chosen as the main location for the filming of “Mamma Mia!”, the popular musical starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan.

Direct flights from a London airport take around three and a half hours. Flysunways.com will automatically search among a variety of airlines to deliver cheap holidays. The cheapest routes often involve a stopover in another airport such as Athens. You’ll be able to select a different flight if the one selected doesn’t match your requirements.

Flights arrive in the neighbouring island of Skiathlos and a ferry will take you to Skopelos.

Skopelos holidays
For people seeking family holidays in the Aegean, Skopelos is an idyllic destination. If you enjoy sailing or are keen to take a boat trip to one of the nearby islands then Skopelos Town is the main harbour on the island. The harbour can sometimes be closed due to gales, so Panorma or Stafylos may be more reliable destinations for sailors at certain times of the year.

If you head up to Glossa in the north-west of the island then you can arrange a sea kayaking trip around the coast. This is an excellent way to see the island and spend time on deserted beaches as well as a fun activity for family holidays.

Gorgeous beaches
If you’re more keen on relaxing in the sun than taking to the water then Skopelos holidays give access to a number of scenic beaches along the coastline. The most popular of all is Stafylos located within walking distance of Skopelos Town. The walk is uphill on your return journey so you’ll need to be fit! Milia beach is less crowded and has lovely clear water and Panorma is well regarded albeit pebbly.

If you’re looking to do the whole Mamma Mia experience then Kastani beach is well worth visiting. The beach has an attached taverna that provides service to people who are sunbathing. A perfect place for anyone who fancies doing some Mamma Mia dance impersonations while on their holidays in Skopelos.

Explore the island
A great way to see the island is to hire a bicycle and head off on a voyage of discovery. You’ll get to experience the sights, sounds and smells of the island rather than being cocooned in a car or a bus. Bike hire is quite reasonable for those seeking cheap holidays. Be warned – the island is quite hilly and hot for much of the year so make sure you’re up to cycling the route you choose.

After you’ve worked up an appetite there are a selection of nice tavernas serving local food in all of the villages of the island. Skopelos town has a number of night clubs and bars if you feel like carrying on after dinner and enjoying a convivial evening sampling the local wine.
