The beautiful island of Lanzarote is just 79 miles from the African coast and its great climate and many attractions make it an attractive holiday destination. There are lots of excellent bargain holidays available to Lanzarote and it’s ideal for everyone who enjoys the finest beaches, spectacular scenery and great nightlife.
Lanazarote for Everyone
Lanzarote has an enviable climate with the temperature rarely dropping below 20C, and that’s in winter! Summer days see temperatures on average of between 27-30C which mean that no matter what time of year you choose you’ll always be warm and comfortable. There’s something in Lanzarote to appeal to everyone from young groups of friends looking for water sports and nightlife to couples and singles. This beautiful Canary Island destination is an excellent choice for family holidays and is sure to please even the most discerning visitor. With accommodation easy to find and bargain holidays widely available, Lanzarote is as perfect for a last minute break as it is for a long planned vacation. It’s popular with all ages and with celebrities too. Penelope Cruz loved the island so much while she was filming that she now takes regular holidays on Lanzarote, and racing driver Jensen Button is also a frequent visitor.
Cesar Manrique and Lanzarote
One of the most noticeable things about Lanzarote is that unlike other popular holiday destinations it has a distinct lack of high rise hotels and buildings. This is in no small way thanks to the pioneering work of the world famous artist Cesar Manrique. Manrique was born on Lanzarote and was instrumental in ensuring that tourism didn’t ruin the beautiful natural landscape. This volcanic island has an other worldly, space age like landscape and its volcanoes are famous for being an integral feature. The Cesar Manrique Foundation is Manrique’s former home, and was built on an extinct volcanic site, making great use of the natural volcanic basal. See the famous ‘bubble rooms’ a great favourite with visitors and ideal for a great day out on family holidays. There are many of Cesar Manrique’s sculptures and mosaics all over Lanzarote and kids will enjoy seeing how many they can spot.
Puerto Del Carmen
The beautiful new resort town of Puerto Del Carmen is located on the east of the island and with many bargain holidays on offer, it’s a perfect choice. The resorts main beach is Playa Grande and this wonderful sandy space is the biggest beach on the island and the Avenida de Las Playas stretches 7km along the beach and has lots of excellent restaurants, cafe’s and bars. Ideal for family holidays there are many water sports to try including windsurfing and paragliding. You can hire a jet ski or join the fun on a banana boat. There are also lots of good dive schools here as Puerto Del Carmen is a favourite for exceptional scuba diving. The resort has fantastic nightlife and is a favourite with a young, international crowd. The many bars and discos of Centro Atlantico are busy after dark and there are also good live music venues. Be sure to spend a day at Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park, an exciting western theme park which children of all ages will love.
Playa Blanca means ‘white beach’ and Lanzarote’s most southern resort lives up to its name. The Marina Rubicon is a wonderful place to marvel at the beautiful yachts and boats or visit the exclusive designer boutiques, but it’s also where you can find the market twice each week. A favourite to visit on family holidays, you can pick up local arts and crafts cheaply and they make great presents. Bargain holidays to Playa Blanca are great for those on a budget and there’s lots to see in this bustling resort. Visit the stunning beaches of Playa Dorado and Playa Flamingo or the the Papagayo coves, a protected area which is now a national park. Though Papagayo Beach is a favourite on family holidays it these sandy inlets and coves don’t have as many facilities as the other beaches in the area. Those with an interest in history should see the Castillo de las Colarados, a defence tower which dates from the 18th century and was built to protect the area from pirates. Nightlife may not be as lively as at Puerto Del Carmen but there are still some good bars and restaurants, including karaoke bars which are a holiday favourite, at Centro Comercial Punto Limones and Centro Comercial Papagayo.
The capital town of Arrecife is a favourite for bargain holidays and it features the tallest building on the island. The Grand Hotel is one of the few high buildings on Lanzarote and there are fabulous views from the restaurant on its top floor. Shopping in the town’s main shopping street, Castillo y Leon is a favourite with the ladies. A range of designer outlets and cafes and restaurants is the perfect way to spend the day while the rest of the family visit El Charco de San Gines, a saltwater lagoon in the town centre. There are several noteable historic places of interest in Arrecife including Iglesia de San Gines which is a symbol of the city and dates from the 17th century. Each year in August this famous old church plays host to one of the many fiestas on the island.
There’s so much to do on holidays to Lanzarote. Great beaches and water sports are highly popular, as are the excellent gold courses. The golf course just 2 minutes outside Puerto Del Carmen was designed by Jack Nicklaus former partner, Ron Kirby. Visit Teguise, at over 600 years old it’s one of the oldest Canary Island towns and is a great place to sample traditional cuisine such as pescado a la sal, fish baked with salt, or sancocho Canario, a dish of potatoes and dried fish. There’s a friendly welcome wherever you visit on Lanzarote, from the bustling capital of Arrecife to the laid back resorts like Playa Blanca and with sunshine guaranteed all year round, you’re certain to have a wonderful time on this charming island.
